Among those museums: the Roanoke Pinball Museum, featuring pinball machines from the 1930s to modern times, which visitors are allowed to play. There’s so much to do at Center - museums, an aquarium, a butterfly garden and a performing arts center. Mill Mountain is a great place for a picnic, and there’s a small zoo there, too.Īfter browsing the market, visit Center in the Square, Roanoke’s seven-story center for arts and culture. The plan was for the star to be lit only at Christmas, but the star was so popular - and is now such a fixture - that it stays lit year-round. Built in 1949, the star started as a brainchild of the local merchants’ association to promote holiday shopping. At Mill Mountain you can park and walk out onto the overlook in front of the star for a stunning view of the Roanoke Valley and the mountains beyond, including McAfee Knob. There’s an easier way.ĭrive over to Mill Mountain for an up-close look at the 88.5-foot tall Roanoke Star, the world’s largest freestanding, illuminated, man-made star. If you’re not up to hiking to 3,197 feet, don’t worry. At McAfee Knob on the Appalachian Trail, you’ll get a panoramic view of the Roanoke Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you are in the Roanoke area, I highly recommend you visit the museum.In Roanoke, the Appalachian Trail meets the Blue Ridge Parkway, which makes for spectacular scenery and lots of hiking, biking and climbing with breathtaking views. There is no admission fee but donations are encouraged. I was especially intrigued with the pottery and mugs. The exhibits included photography, pottery, ceramics, drawings, and sculpture I was very impressed with the skill and imagination of the students. It featured the work of eight members of the Hollins University class of 2016 majoring in studio art. I was fortunate enough to see the 2016 Senior Majors Exhibition. The museum presents work from the permanent collection and mounts exhibitions that explore currents in contemporary art. It is a state-of-the-art climate-controlled facility with three interconnected galleries totaling approximately 4000 square feet of exhibition space. The museum is on the campus of Hollins College on the first floor of the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center. It was only a short drive from the hotel so I decided to visit. I love visiting museums and I was unfamiliar with this one. I saw an advertisement for the Eleanor D. I was in Roanoke on business when I had a break between conferences.
